What this page covers

A clearer view of tattoo culture.

These figures are intended as a straightforward reference for anyone writing about tattoo culture in the United States. Most of the ownership and attitude data comes from Pew Research Center’s July 2023 survey of 8,480 U.S. adults. The tattoo-ink recall figure comes from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s October 2024 guidance update.

Figures describe the people and time periods named beside them. They are not estimates of the number of tattoo studios, artists, or appointments.

Method and sources

Read the source, not just the number.

Pew Research Center surveyed 8,480 U.S. adults from July 10 through July 16, 2023, using its American Trends Panel. The survey was weighted to represent the U.S. adult population. The Center notes that its 2010 tattoo finding is not directly comparable because its survey mode and question wording changed.

  1. Pew Research Center: “32% of Americans have a tattoo, including 22% who have more than one”, published August 15, 2023.
  2. U.S. Food and Drug Administration: “FDA Issues Final Guidance on Tattoo Inks”, published October 24, 2024.
